When I discovered that I was pregnant with my first child, I felt the elation and also the terror of what was coming…the birth. Every woman I had known who had given birth delivered via Cesarean and I feared that I would be no different. My response to this fear was to search out other alternatives, and that is when I first met Sherry. Our culture has taught us to fear birth and that fear is not always something easily conquered. Sherry brings years of experience in the medical field to an amazing sensibility of what women are capable of without medical intervention. This unique marriage of philosophies allowed my own fears to be calmed as I knew she satisfied the intuitive side of me that trusted my body’s ability to birth, but also my deeply ingrained fear of the ‘what if’ scenario. In fact, that ‘what if’ situation became a reality as my first kiddo turned out to be a hefty 10 lber when he came out. The problem was, he didn’t want to come out on his own. When others present tensed up around a ‘stuck’ baby, Sherry displayed a sense of calm and control of the situation that I am still awestruck by. Having worked in the medical field for many years, I understand the tendency for medical professionals to overreact in situations such as these. Sherry understands the natural process of birth and trusts that even big babies will find their way out, even if they need a little help. Without her, I know I would have ended up with the Cesarean I so desperately wanted to avoid. After the birth, I floundered a bit more than was typical for a first time mom. Sherry, in her sweetness, drove to my house at 10 o’clock at night through a thunderstorm, to be by my side. She walked me through the parts of my birth that I struggled with, helped me with the awkward first few days of breastfeeding, and ultimately, gave me peace when I had none. Not many women are lucky enough to experience such exemplary care during pregnancy and birth. She is a shining example of midwifery care and I am honored that her skilled hands caught my sweet baby boy.

My husband and I first met Sherry at an out of hospital birth orientation. During the question and answer portion it was obvious that all the midwives looked to Sherry for information and guidance. When we interviewed with her it became clear that her knowledge and experience was only matched by her love of women’s health. We loved how my appointments we’re catered to not only my physical health but my emotional health too. Any fears we might have had about my health or the birth were completely gone by the end of each appointment and by the next she would have even more resources so we always felt we were making the best informed decision for our daughter. By the time I went into labor I had absolute trust in my body to do what it was made to do, so much so that I arrived to the birth center completely dilated! I had a wonderful birth, Sherry cheered me on and even fixed my hair for my birth photos. Sherry is our midwife, our friend and an honorary member of our family!

We would like to once again thank you for the wonderful job you do and have done for us. Calvin and I both believe whole-heartedly that you are an angel that was sent to us for this adventure. Thank you for all of the guidance and support in the days after Ryder was born. We do hope to see you again. It would break our hearts to think this was a once-in-a-lifetime event. I just wanted to let you know that the short amount of time you spent that evening with my husband and I in the hospital a few weeks ago meant so much. In that short time you gained so much trust and respect from us, we could not be more greatful to have run into an angel like you. When I told my husband that you actually stopped in to say “hi” at my appointment with dr. Petty last week, he was as impressed as I was that you remembered and cared. Thank you so much and god bless you every day in your work.

I have been so blessed to work with some midwives this year for the first time. they are not new to the midwifery scene but i just haven’t had the opportunity to work with them. I walked away from these births so thankful and so excited that the DFW area has these wonderful women around to support and encourage families. Sherry amazed me with her tenderness and willingness to let her client birth on her own. She was encouraging, thoughtful, servant hearted; all that this family needed. She accepted them when they were well into their pregnancy and took them under her wing. From a doula perspective I felt very welcomed at this birth.

Sherry caught all 3 of my babies at home. She is skillful, reassuring, educated and loving. Her experience in so many settings has done nothing but enlarge her “toolbox”. It’s very clear she believes in out of hospital birth with every cell of her being.
